Andar ghusa nakhun ka ilaaj: EDFC, Surat explains what causes an ingrown toenail and how a minor procedure stops it from growing back into the skin.

An ingrown toenail ("andar ghusa nakhun") happens when the edge of the nail grows into the skin beside it, causing pain, redness and sometimes pus. In this video, Elegance Diabetic Foot & Ulcer Clinic (EDFC), Surat shows ingrown toenail surgery and explains when it is needed, under the guidance of Dr. Ashutosh Shah.

What Causes an Ingrown Toenail?

  • Cutting nails too short or rounding the corners
  • Tight or narrow shoes that press on the toes
  • Naturally curved or thick nails
  • Injury to the toe
  • Sweaty feet or poor foot hygiene

Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness along the side of the nail
  • Redness and swelling of the skin fold
  • Pus, bleeding or extra tissue growing over the nail edge
  • The problem keeps coming back after home treatment

Ingrown Toenail Surgery

Mild cases may settle with proper nail cutting and footwear advice. When the nail is infected or keeps growing back into the skin, a minor procedure is usually advised:

  • The toe is numbed with local anaesthesia.
  • The ingrown edge of the nail is removed.
  • The nail root on that side is treated so the edge does not grow back.
  • A dressing is applied, and most people walk home the same day.

Extra Care if You Have Diabetes

For people with diabetes, an ingrown toenail can quickly become infected and turn into a wound that heals slowly. Do not cut or dig into the nail at home. Have it treated early by a foot care team, and check the healing toe daily until it has fully closed.
