Investigations

Eye, bone, heart, circulation and nerve tests that help us look after the whole person with diabetes, not just the foot.

10 investigations · explained in plain language

Eye screening

Fundus Photography

A quick, painless photograph of the back of the eye (the retina). It shows early changes caused by diabetes, such as diabetic retinopathy, long before vision is affected, and gives a clear record to compare at the next visit.

  • check_circleScreens for diabetic retinopathy
  • check_circleAlso helps detect glaucoma and macular changes
  • check_circleNo injection and no contact with the eye

Bone health

DEXA Bone Scan

A low-dose X-ray scan that measures bone mineral density at the hip and spine. Long-standing diabetes and age both affect bone strength, and this test finds thinning bones (osteoporosis) before a fracture happens.

  • check_circleEarly detection of osteoporosis
  • check_circleEstimates fracture risk
  • check_circleGuides treatment and follow-up

Body composition

DEXA Body Composition

The same DEXA scanner can map how much of your body is fat, muscle and bone, region by region. It separates harmful belly (visceral) fat from fat under the skin, which helps plan diet, exercise and diabetes control.

  • check_circleTotal and regional body fat percentage
  • check_circleLean muscle mass and balance
  • check_circleTracks progress over time

Imaging

Digital X-ray

Sharp digital images of bones and joints, taken with a lower radiation dose than older film X-rays. For the diabetic foot it is used to look for bone infection, Charcot changes, fractures and foreign bodies.

  • check_circleClear images, ready within minutes
  • check_circleLower radiation dose
  • check_circleEasy to store and share with your doctor

Imaging

Ultrasonography

Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, to show soft tissues, blood vessels and organs in real time. It helps find collections of pus, swelling and soft-tissue problems, and checks organs such as the liver and kidneys.

  • check_circleNo radiation - safe to repeat
  • check_circleReal-time view of soft tissue and vessels
  • check_circleQuick and comfortable

Heart

Treadmill Test (TMT)

Also called a stress test. You walk on a treadmill that slowly gets faster and steeper while your heart rhythm and blood pressure are monitored. People with diabetes can have heart disease without chest pain, so this test helps find it early.

  • check_circleChecks how the heart copes with exercise
  • check_circleHelps detect blocked heart arteries
  • check_circleMeasures exercise capacity

Heart

ECG (Electrocardiogram)

A simple test that records the electrical activity of the heart through small stickers on the chest. It takes a few minutes and helps detect rhythm problems and signs of a past or current heart attack.

  • check_circleTakes only a few minutes
  • check_circleDetects rhythm problems
  • check_circleA routine check before any surgery

Heart

2D Echo

An ultrasound scan of the heart that shows its chambers, valves and pumping strength. It is painless, needs no preparation and takes about 30 minutes, and is often done before foot surgery to make sure the heart is fit for it.

  • check_circleShows heart size, valves and pumping
  • check_circleChecks blood flow with Doppler
  • check_circleNo radiation, back to normal activity at once

Circulation

Vascular Check-up

A set of tests that checks the arteries and veins of the legs, including ankle-brachial index (ABI) and Doppler studies. Poor blood flow slows wound healing, so this is one of the most important checks for anyone with a diabetic foot problem.

  • check_circleDetects peripheral artery disease
  • check_circleShows how well a wound can heal
  • check_circleGuides the need for blood-flow treatment

Nerves

Neuropathy Check-up

Diabetes can slowly damage the nerves of the feet, causing numbness, tingling or burning. Simple tests of touch, vibration and temperature show how much protective feeling is left, so a small injury is not missed.

  • check_circleFinds loss of protective sensation early
  • check_circleMeasures the risk of foot ulcers
  • check_circlePainless and quick
