Non-Diabetic Ulcer Clinic
Lymphedema-Related Ulcers
Long-standing swelling from lymphedema can stretch and break down the skin, leading to weeping wounds and recurrent infection. Managing the swelling is central to healing them.
Lymphedema Ulcer Treatment in India
Lymphedema ulcer treatment in India combines decongestive therapy compression, lymphatic drainage, and skin care with wound care to heal ulcers caused by long-standing swelling. At EDFC, controlling the swelling is the key to healing, because the wound cannot close while the limb stays heavily congested.
What is a lymphedema ulcer?
Lymphedema is chronic swelling that builds up when the lymphatic system can't drain fluid properly, often in a leg. Over time the swollen, stretched skin becomes fragile, leaks fluid, and breaks down into ulcers that are slow to heal and prone to infection. The wound is a symptom of the underlying swelling.
The mainstay of treatment is decongestive therapy: graduated compression, manual lymphatic drainage, careful skin care, and movement to reduce the swelling combined with wound care for the ulcer itself. Circulation is checked first to make sure compression is safe. At EDFC India's first dedicated foot and ulcer clinic this is managed by Dr. Ashutosh Shah's team in Surat (Gujarat) and Vizianagaram (Andhra Pradesh).
Signs of a lymphedema ulcer
- A long-standing swollen leg or limb
- Skin that weeps clear fluid or feels tight and stretched
- Ulcers on a chronically swollen leg
- Thickened, hardened, or warty skin changes
- Repeated skin infections (cellulitis) in the limb
When to seek care in India: a swollen limb with weeping skin or an ulcer needs assessment — controlling the swelling protects the skin and helps the wound heal.
How lymphedema ulcers are treated
- Assessment — confirming lymphedema and checking circulation before compression.
- Compression therapy — graduated bandaging or garments to reduce swelling.
- Lymphatic drainage — techniques to move fluid out of the limb.
- Skin care — protecting and treating fragile skin.
- Wound care — appropriate dressings for the ulcer.
- Infection control — treating and preventing repeated cellulitis.
Why choose EDFC in India
