Venous Leg Ulcers

Venous leg ulcers are slow-healing wounds, usually on the lower leg or ankle, caused by poor return of blood through the veins. They are the most common type of leg ulcer.

Venous Leg Ulcer Treatment in India

Venous leg ulcer treatment in India centres on compression therapy alongside wound care and treating the underlying vein problem  to heal an ulcer caused by poor blood drainage from the legs. At EDFC, this is the most common leg ulcer treated, and compression is the proven foundation of healing.

What is a venous leg ulcer?

A venous ulcer forms when the leg veins fail to return blood efficiently to the heart, so pressure builds in the lower leg (venous hypertension). This damages the skin, usually around the inner ankle (the "gaiter" area), producing a shallow, often weepy ulcer with surrounding discoloured, hardened skin. They are the most common type of leg ulcer.

The cornerstone of treatment is compression  graduated bandages or stockings that support the veins and reduce swelling combined with wound care and elevation. Treating the underlying vein disease (such as varicose veins) helps prevent recurrence. At EDFC  India's first dedicated foot and ulcer clinic  this is managed by Dr. Ashutosh Shah's team in Surat (Gujarat) and Vizianagaram (Andhra Pradesh), with circulation first checked to confirm compression is safe.

Signs of a venous ulcer

  • A shallow ulcer around the inner ankle
  • Aching, heavy, or swollen legs that improve with elevation
  • Brown or discoloured, hardened skin around the ulcer
  • Weeping or oozing from the wound
  • Varicose veins or a history of leg vein problems

When to see a doctor in India: a leg ulcer that has not healed in a few weeks should be assessed. Circulation is checked first, because compression is only safe once arterial supply is confirmed adequate.

How venous ulcers are treated

  • Assessment — confirming the venous cause and checking arterial circulation first.
  • Compression therapy — graduated bandages or stockings, the foundation of healing.
  • Wound care — cleaning, debridement, and the right dressing.
  • Elevation & movement — to reduce swelling and support veins.
  • Treating the cause — addressing varicose or faulty veins to prevent recurrence.

Why choose EDFC in India

  • Right diagnosis — confirming the venous cause before compression.
  • Dedicated wound care — India's first chain built only for foot and ulcer care.
  • Recurrence focus — treating the vein problem, not just the wound.
  • Two branches — Surat, Gujarat and Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh.
