A simple daily, weekly and yearly diabetic foot care routine from EDFC, Surat that helps prevent foot ulcers in a few minutes a day.
Most diabetic foot ulcers can be prevented with a simple routine that takes only a few minutes a day. In this video, Elegance Diabetic Foot & Ulcer Clinic (EDFC), Surat shares a diabetic foot ulcer prevention routine, under the guidance of Dr. Ashutosh Shah. Here is that routine, step by step.
Every Morning
- Check your feet: Look at the tops, soles, heels and between the toes for cuts, blisters, redness or swelling. Use a mirror or ask a family member.
- Wash in lukewarm water: Test the water with your elbow, not your foot. Do not soak for long.
- Dry well: Pat dry, especially between the toes.
- Moisturise: Apply cream to dry skin and heels, but not between the toes.
- Wear clean socks: Choose soft, seamless cotton socks.
- Check your shoes: Shake them out and feel inside for stones or rough spots before wearing.
During the Day
- Never walk barefoot, even at home.
- Avoid sitting cross-legged for long periods.
- Keep your blood sugar in the range advised by your doctor.
Every Evening
- Check your feet again, especially after a long day of walking.
- Rest with your feet raised if they feel swollen or tired.
Every Week
- Trim toenails straight across after bathing, when they are soft, or have them trimmed at the clinic.
- Look for thick nails, calluses or corns, and have them treated rather than cutting them yourself.
Every Year
Get a full diabetic foot check, or more often if you have numbness, poor blood flow or a past ulcer.
