Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage from long-standing high blood sugar. In the feet it reduces protective sensation, so injuries and pressure go unnoticed — the root cause of most diabetic foot ulcers.
Diabetic Neuropathy Treatment in India
Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage from long-term high blood sugar that causes numbness, tingling, burning, or loss of sensation in the feet — and it is the single biggest reason diabetic foot ulcers develop. At EDFC, neuropathy is assessed and the at-risk foot protected before wounds occur.
What is diabetic neuropathy?
Over time, high blood sugar damages the nerves, most often those supplying the feet and legs. This can cause unpleasant symptoms — tingling, burning, or shooting pains — but, more dangerously, it can also reduce or remove the ability to feel pain, heat, and pressure. When a foot can't feel injury, a blister, cut, or pressure point can become an ulcer without the person noticing. That loss of the "warning system" is what makes neuropathy so central to foot risk.
Signs to watch for
- Numbness or reduced feeling in the feet
- Tingling, burning, or "pins and needles"
- Sharp or shooting pains, often worse at night
- Not feeling cuts, blisters, or stones in the shoe
- Changes in foot shape or muscle weakness
When to see a doctor in India: if you have diabetes and any numbness, tingling, or loss of feeling in your feet, get assessed — even without pain, reduced sensation means your feet need active protection.
Why it happens
Prolonged high blood sugar is the main cause, with risk rising the longer diabetes is present and the less well it is controlled. Other factors like circulation problems and high blood pressure can contribute.
How EDFC manages diabetic neuropathy
- Nerve assessment — testing sensation to gauge risk.
- Protective footwear — offloading and diabetic footwear for the insensitive foot.
- Foot-care education — daily checks and prevention.
- Surgery in selected cases — nerve procedures where appropriate.
