Non-Diabetic Ulcer Clinic
Malignant Wounds
Some wounds are not caused by pressure or poor circulation, but by cancer within the skin itself. Any ulcer that grows, bleeds easily or refuses to heal deserves a biopsy.
A malignant wound is an ulcer caused by cancer in or under the skin, either a skin cancer or a deposit from elsewhere. Diagnosis by biopsy comes first; treatment then combines cancer therapy with expert wound and odour control.
What Is a Malignant Wound?
Most chronic wounds have mechanical or circulatory causes, however a small and important group are malignant: the ulcer is itself a cancer. It may be a skin cancer that has grown and broken down, a long-standing ulcer that has transformed over decades, or a deposit from an internal cancer reaching the skin.
Marjolin's ulcer: a cancer that develops within a long-standing chronic wound or old scar, often after many years.
Red Flags in Any Wound
- Raised, rolled or cauliflower-like wound edges
- Easy bleeding on light contact
- Steady growth despite proper wound care
- A decades-old scar or ulcer that suddenly changes
How Does EDFC Manage Malignant Wounds?
Diagnosis is by biopsy, always. Once confirmed, treatment is planned with oncology colleagues: surgical excision with reconstruction where curative, and expert palliative wound care where the goal is comfort, controlling odour, discharge and bleeding with specialised dressings. Either way, the patient's dignity and quality of life lead the plan.
Cost and the First Step in Surat
A biopsy is a small, affordable procedure, and further costs are explained once the diagnosis is clear. If any wound shows the red flags above, book a biopsy consultation promptly, because early diagnosis widens every option.
