Dr. Ashutosh Shah's diabetic foot care awareness program in Surat: the daily dos and don'ts that help people with diabetes protect their feet.
Most diabetic foot ulcers and amputations can be prevented with simple daily care. To spread this message, Dr. Ashutosh Shah and the Elegance Diabetic Foot & Ulcer Clinic (EDFC) team held a diabetic foot care awareness program in Surat. This short video shares highlights from the program.
Why Diabetic Foot Care Awareness Matters
Diabetes can reduce feeling and blood flow in the feet. A small cut, blister or callus may go unnoticed and turn into an ulcer or infection. Many patients reach a doctor only when the wound has become serious. Awareness programs help patients and families recognise problems early and know when to seek help.
Diabetic Foot Care: Do
- Check both feet every day, including the soles and between the toes.
- Wash feet daily in lukewarm water and dry well between the toes.
- Apply moisturiser to dry skin, but not between the toes.
- Wear soft, well-fitting footwear with socks, indoors and outdoors.
- Cut toenails straight across, or have them trimmed at the clinic.
- Get a diabetic foot check at least once a year.
Diabetic Foot Care: Don'ts
- Do not walk barefoot, even at home or in temples.
- Do not cut corns or calluses with a blade, or use corn caps.
- Do not use hot water bottles or heating pads on the feet.
- Do not ignore a wound, blister or colour change, even if it is painless.
- Do not smoke, as it reduces blood flow to the feet.
