What an air cast is and why it is used: EDFC, Surat explains how this removable walking boot protects the foot in ulcers, injuries and after surgery.

An air cast is a removable walking boot that protects the foot and ankle while they heal. In this short video, Elegance Diabetic Foot & Ulcer Clinic (EDFC), Surat explains what an air cast is, why it is used, and how it helps with foot pain, injuries and diabetic foot problems, under the guidance of Dr. Ashutosh Shah.

What Is an Air Cast?

An air cast (also called a cast walker or walking boot) is a firm, padded boot with a rigid frame and air cells inside. The air cells can be inflated to give a snug, cushioned fit around the foot and lower leg. It holds the foot steady and spreads pressure, while still allowing the patient to walk.

Why Is an Air Cast Used?

  • Diabetic foot ulcers: Reduces pressure on the wound so it can heal.
  • Charcot foot: Protects weakened bones and joints while the foot settles.
  • Fractures and sprains: Keeps the foot and ankle stable during healing.
  • After foot surgery: Protects the operated area during recovery.
  • Tendon problems and heel pain: Rests the injured area and eases pain.

Air Cast vs Total Contact Cast

Both are used to take pressure off the foot. A Total Contact Cast is fixed and cannot be removed by the patient, which makes it very effective for stubborn ulcers. An air cast is removable, which allows wound checks, dressing changes and bathing, but it works best only when worn as advised. The doctor chooses the right option for each patient.
