How a custom silicone prosthesis at EDFC, Surat helps after toe or partial foot amputation, protecting the remaining foot and improving balance.
Losing a toe or part of the foot to diabetes changes how a person walks, balances and wears shoes. A custom silicone prosthesis can help restore the shape of the foot and protect what remains. In this short video, Elegance Diabetic Foot & Ulcer Clinic (EDFC), Surat shows silicone prosthetic support for the diabetic foot, under the guidance of Dr. Ashutosh Shah.
What Is a Silicone Foot Prosthesis?
A silicone prosthesis is a soft, custom-made replacement for a missing toe or part of the foot. It is shaped to fit the person's foot exactly and can be matched to their skin tone, so it looks natural and is comfortable to wear inside footwear.
Why It Matters After Diabetic Foot Amputation
- Protects the remaining foot: Fills the gap left by a missing toe, so neighbouring toes do not drift or bend out of shape.
- Spreads pressure evenly: Reduces pressure points that can cause new ulcers on the remaining foot.
- Improves balance and walking: Helps restore a more natural walking pattern.
- Helps with footwear: Allows shoes to fit better and stops the foot sliding inside them.
- Restores confidence: A natural-looking foot can make it easier to return to daily life.
How the Prosthesis Is Made
The foot is first examined to make sure the wound has fully healed. A mould or measurement of the foot is taken, and the prosthesis is custom-made and fitted. Patients are shown how to wear, clean and check it, and follow-up visits make sure it continues to fit well.
